Frequent Asked Questions About Salkantay Trek 5 days

How difficult is the 5-Day Salkantay Trek?

The Salkantay Trek is rated moderate to challenging, mainly due to the high altitude and long daily hikes. The trail reaches an altitude of 4,650 meters (15,255 feet) at Salkantay Pass. You don’t need to be an athlete, but you should have good physical condition and be prepared for strenuous effort.

When is the best time to hike the Salkantay Trek?

The best season is during the dry months, from April to October. May, June, and September offer the clearest skies, lush landscapes, and ideal trekking conditions. It’s best to avoid January and February due to heavy rainfall and potential trail closures.

Do I need a permit to do the Salkantay Trek?

No special permit is required for Salkantay, unlike the Classic Inca Trail. However, entry to Machu Picchu does require a ticket, which should be booked in advance. If you plan to hike Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, note that tickets are limited and must also be reserved ahead of time.

Can I hike Salkantay independently, or do I need to book a tour?

While it’s technically possible to hike the route independently, booking an organized tour is highly recommended. A guided trek includes transportation, meals, professional guidance, camping gear, and full logistical support—making the journey safer, easier, and more comfortable, especially considering the altitude and variable weather.

How should I prepare physically for the trek?

It’s advisable to do some pre-trek hiking and cardio workouts. Arriving in Cusco at least 2 days before the trek is essential for acclimatization. Walking at a steady pace, staying hydrated, and having the right gear are key to enjoying the trail safely.

Where do you sleep during the trek?

Most nights are spent at organized campsites, many with domes or tents already set up. Some agencies offer stays in Sky Domes or Eco Domes during the first or second night, and the final night is typically in a hotel in Aguas Calientes.

Is the entrance to Machu Picchu included in the trek?

It depends on the agency. Most well-organized tours include the Machu Picchu entrance ticket, return train and bus transportation, and optionally tickets to Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain. Always confirm what’s included in your package.

Is the Salkantay Trek safe?

Yes, as long as it’s done with a reputable tour operator. Professional guides are trained for emergencies and carry first aid kits. It’s important to follow the guide’s instructions and be respectful of the natural environment.

What’s the difference between the Salkantay Trek and the Inca Trail?

The Salkantay Trek is a more physically demanding alternative that doesn’t require a special permit. The landscape is more wild and remote, with glaciers, high jungle, and traditional Andean villages. The Inca Trail, on the other hand, is more focused on archaeology, passing through several Inca ruins, and is more regulated with limited daily entries.
