Short Inca Trail & Machu Picchu – 1 Day Tour itinerary

Day
01

Km 104 – Chachabamba – Wiñay Wayna – Sun Gate – Machu Picchu

Your adventure begins early in the morning (around 4:00 AM) when your expert Nickey Travel guide picks you up from your hotel in Cusco or the agreed meeting point. Together, we’ll drive to the Ollantaytambo train station to catch the 6:10 AM Expedition Train — a scenic 1.5-hour ride through the heart of the Sacred Valley of the Incas.

At Kilometer 104, the starting point of your trek, you’ll pass the checkpoint and immediately immerse yourself in the magic of the Inca Trail. Your first stop is the archaeological site of Chachabamba (2,100 m / 6,927 ft), an ancient Incan refuge used by travelers heading toward Machu Picchu centuries ago.

From here, the real adventure begins: a 3-hour ascent along original Inca stone steps, surrounded by an enchanting Andean ecosystem. Along the way, you’ll encounter:

  • Colorful orchids and exotic flowers dotting the landscape 🌸

  • Towering native trees providing refreshing shade 🌿

  • Rushing waterfalls cascading down the mountains ⛰️

  • The chance to spot Vizcachas (rabbit-like chinchillas) and, if incredibly lucky, the elusive Spectacled Bear 🐻

Your effort is rewarded when you reach Wiñay Wayna (“Forever Young”) at 2,650 m / 8,747 ft, one of the most stunning archaeological gems along the Inca Trail. After a well-deserved rest and time to explore, you’ll continue hiking toward the famous Intipunku — the Sun Gate (2,730 m / 9,007 ft).

Here, prepare for the most breathtaking moment of the day: your first panoramic view of Machu Picchu. The sense of accomplishment and wonder is simply unforgettable!

From the Sun Gate, you’ll descend gradually into the upper section of the citadel (circuit 1), where your guide will reveal the mysteries, legends, and history behind this UNESCO World Heritage site.

Optional Upgrade: For an additional USD $50, you can enhance your experience by choosing Circuit 2 or Circuit 3, which offer alternative perspectives and less crowded views of the archaeological wonder.

After exploring, you’ll board a bus down to the charming town of Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo), where you’ll enjoy a well-earned rest before taking the train back to Ollantaytambo. From there, our private transport will return you safely to your hotel in Cusco. (Please note: train schedules may vary depending on availability.)

Frequent Asked Questions

What is the One-Day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu?

The One-Day Inca Trail is a shorter version of the classic 4-day trek. It allows you to experience the magic of the Inca Trail, visiting archaeological sites like Chachabamba, Wiñay Wayna, and the Sun Gate (Inti Punku) before reaching Machu Picchu — all in just one day.

How long is the One-Day Inca Trail hike?

The hike covers approximately 12 km (7.5 miles). Depending on your pace and weather conditions, it usually takes around 6 to 7 hours, including breaks and a picnic lunch along the way.

How difficult is the One-Day Inca Trail?

The trail is rated as moderate. While it’s shorter than the classic trek, there are several steep ascents and stone steps. A basic level of fitness is recommended, but no previous trekking experience is required.

Do I need a permit for the One-Day Inca Trail?

Yes. Just like the classic trek, the One-Day Inca Trail requires a government-issued permit, which also includes your Machu Picchu entrance ticket. Because permits are limited, we highly recommend booking at least 2 to 3 months in advance.

When is the best time to do the One-Day Inca Trail?

The best months are during the dry season: April to October.

  • Dry season (April – October): Sunny days, clearer trails, and the best panoramic views.

  • Rainy season (November – March): Expect muddy paths and cloudy views, but fewer crowds.

⚠️ Important: The Inca Trail is closed in February for maintenance.

Is there a student discount for the One-Day Inca Trail?

Yes. Nickey Travel offers a USD 20 discount for students aged 18–24 years with a valid student ID. We also offer the same discount for children under 18 with a valid passport.

Can I visit Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain after the hike?

Unfortunately, no. Due to time constraints, it’s not possible to include Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain in the One-Day Inca Trail itinerary. If you’d like to climb these, we recommend booking an overnight tour instead.

How far in advance should I book the One-Day Inca Trail?

Because permits are limited and in high demand, we suggest booking at least 2 to 3 months in advance — especially if you plan to hike during the high season (May to September).
