Cusco – Huaran – Cancha Cancha

Your Andean Mountain adventure through the Lares Valley begins early, with a 6:00 a.m. pickup from your Cusco hotel. A scenic drive takes us to Huaran, the starting point of the trek, where we meet our horsemen and pack horses. After a brief orientation, we begin a gradual 3-hour ascent toward Cancha Cancha.

We’ll stop for lunch next to a tranquil river — a delicious meal prepared by our trekking chef to recharge your energy.

Our campsite for the night is in Cancha Cancha (3,900 m / 12,800 ft), one of the most isolated and traditional Andean communities. The village remains self-sufficient and was only connected to electricity in 2019.

After settling into your tents and enjoying afternoon tea, your guide will take you to visit a local family, giving you a glimpse of their daily life and ancient customs. Later, enjoy dinner and a fascinating night under the stars, as your guide explains the Inca constellations that once guided agricultural life in the Andes.

After reaching the summit, we descend for about 3 hours toward our next campsite near Quiswarani (3,700 m / 12,139 ft). Along the way, you’ll encounter highland shepherds dressed in traditional Andean attire, guiding their llamas and alpacas across the mountains.

FAQs

What is the Lares Trek + Short Inca Trail?

It’s a unique combination of the Lares Valley cultural trek and the Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. This route blends traditional Andean villages, natural hot springs, and Inca ruins before joining the classic Inca Trail on the final approach to Machu Picchu.

How long is the Lares Trek + Short Inca Trail?

The trek covers approximately 39 km (24 miles) over 4 days and 3 nights. The highest altitude is around 4,700 m (15,419 ft) during the Lares section, followed by the scenic Inca Trail descent to Machu Picchu.

How difficult is the trek?

The trek is rated moderate to challenging. You don’t need to be an athlete, but you should be in good physical condition. Regular walking or cardio exercise before the trip is recommended, and spending at least 2–3 days in Cusco beforehand helps with acclimatization.

When is the best time to do the Lares Trek + Short Inca Trail?

The best months are April through October, during the dry season.

  • Dry Season (Apr–Oct): Clear skies, cooler nights, ideal trekking conditions.

  • Rainy Season (Nov–Mar): Fewer tourists, greener landscapes, but expect showers.
Note: The Short Inca Trail is closed every February for maintenance.

Do I need a permit for the Short Inca Trail?

Yes. The Short Inca Trail is part of the official Inca Trail network, and permits are required. Permits are limited and sell out quickly, so early booking (at least 3–4 months in advance) is strongly recommended.

Are there hot springs along the route?

Yes! On the third day, trekkers visit the Lares Hot Springs, a natural thermal bath surrounded by mountains — perfect for relaxing tired muscles.

What kind of accommodation is provided?

During the Lares section, you’ll camp in comfortable tents (4-person tent for 2 trekkers).
On the final night in Aguas Calientes, you’ll stay in a 2★ or 3★ hotel depending on your selected package.

How many people are in each group?

We specialize in small groups to ensure a personalized experience.
Typical group size: 2–6 people (maximum 8 travelers per guide).

Will I suffer from altitude sickness?

Most trekkers experience mild symptoms such as shortness of breath or a light headache at higher elevations.
To minimize it:

  • Spend at least 2 days in Cusco or Sacred Valley before the trek.

  • Stay hydrated and drink coca tea.

  • Our guides carry oxygen and are trained to assist if needed.

Are there toilets and showers on the trek?

Yes! Private, sanitary toilet tents are provided during camping nights.
You’ll also have access to hot showers at the Lares Hot Springs on day three.

What happens if I can’t finish the trek?

If you cannot continue due to health or altitude issues, our guide will help arrange safe transport to the nearest town. You can still rejoin the group later in Aguas Calientes to visit Machu Picchu. (Travel insurance is recommended.)

What time is the train back to Cusco?

The return train usually departs around 2:55 p.m. or 3:20 p.m., giving you plenty of time to explore Machu Picchu before returning.

Can I upgrade to the Vistadome Train?

Yes, you can upgrade to the Vistadome panoramic train for $65 USD. It includes larger windows, snacks, and an onboard cultural show.

Is the trek environmentally friendly?

Absolutely. We operate with strong eco-friendly principles, minimizing waste, respecting local communities, and supporting sustainable tourism in the Andes.

What is the Lares Trek?

The Lares Trek is an alternative hiking route to the Inca Trail that connects traditional Andean communities with Machu Picchu. It is known for its mountain scenery, hot springs, and close cultural encounters with Quechua villagers.

How many days does the Lares Trek and short inca trail take?

The classic version lasts 5 days and 4 nights, ending with a visit to Machu Picchu on the final day. Some tour companies offer others versions, depending on the chosen campsites and route.

Is the Lares Trek difficult?

It is considered moderate in difficulty. Although not as steep as the Inca Trail, high altitude can be challenging. It is recommended to acclimate in Cusco for at least two days before starting the trek.

What is the altitude on the Lares Trek?

The highest points reach around 4,400 meters (14,435 feet), such as Ipsaycocha Pass. In contrast, Machu Picchu sits at 2,430 meters, meaning you descend significantly toward the end of the journey.

Where does the trek end? Do you hike directly to Machu Picchu?

The trek usually ends in Ollantaytambo or Hidroeléctrica, from where travelers either take a train or continue hiking to Aguas Calientes. The visit to Machu Picchu happens the next day, either by bus or on foot.

Do I need to book in advance?

Although permits are not required for the Lares Trek (unlike the Inca Trail), it is highly recommended to book in advance, especially during the high season (May to September), to secure train tickets and Machu Picchu entry.

When is the best time to do the Lares Trek?

The ideal trekking season is from April to October, during the dry season. Weather conditions are safer, and visibility is much better during these months.

Can I do the Lares Trek on my own?

It is possible but not recommended. The route crosses remote, unmarked areas. Carrying your own gear, food, and navigation tools without logistical support can be physically and mentally demanding.

What kind of accommodation is available during the trek?

Most nights are spent at campsites along the trail. Some versions of the trek include one night in a local guesthouse or community home in villages like Huacahuasi. The final night is typically in a hotel in Aguas Calientes.

Are there bathrooms or showers along the route?

Most campsites offer basic bathrooms, but hot showers are only available at specific points like the Lares hot springs or select rural lodges.

Does the tour include the entrance to Machu Picchu?

Yes. All organized tour packages should include the entry ticket to Machu Picchu and transportation back to Cusco. Some also offer optional Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain tickets if reserved in advance.
