Best time to visit Machu Picchu
Climate in Machu Picchu: Real seasons
Machu Picchu is located in the cloud forest region, at about 2,430 meters (7,970 ft) above sea level. That means the weather changes significantly between the dry season and the rainy season.
Dry season (April to October)
It is considered the best time to visit Machu Picchu if you want:
Clear blue skies
Better visibility for photos
Safer hiking conditions (less mud)
Lower probability of rain
🔹 Most recommended months: May, June, July, and August
🔹 June is special because of Cusco’s traditional festivities (Inti Raymi).
Keep in mind: this is high season. There are more tourists and you must book tickets in advance (at least 1–2 months before).
Rainy season (November to March)
Everything becomes greener and more mystical. The mountains look intense, covered with mist and lush vegetation.
Advantages:
Fewer tourists
Greener landscapes
Better hotel prices
Disadvantages:
Frequent rain (especially January and February)
Slippery trails
Some trekking routes may close (for example, part of the Inca Trail in February)
As Cusqueños, we recommend avoiding January if you want a more comfortable experience.
So… What is the best time to visit Machu Picchu?
If it is your first time, we recommend:
May or September
These months are ideal because:
The weather is stable
There are not as many crowds as in July
Photos look amazing
Prices are not as high
It is the perfect balance between weather and number of visitors.
Local advice that few people tell you
Many tourists think only the weather matters, but you should also consider:
🎟️ Ticket availability (Circuits 1, 2, or 3)
🚆 Trains to Aguas Calientes
🏨 Accommodation
🎒 If you plan to do trekking such as Salkantay or the Inca Trail
We always say:
More important than the month is booking in advance.

✔ Bring a rain poncho even during dry season
✔ Do not trust the weather forecast 100%
✔ If traveling in high season, avoid weekends
