The Choquequirao trek is one of the most captivating and adventurous journeys you can experience in the Cusco region. Surrounded by dramatic valleys, towering snow-capped peaks, and rich biodiversity of plants, birds, and wildlife, it’s no wonder this route is becoming a must for travelers seeking something beyond the ordinary.

Perched at 3,030 meters above sea level on the slopes of the Salkantay mountain range, Choquequirao is embraced by the sacred Apus (mountain deities) of Yamana, Ampay, Chokecarpu, Pumasiyo, and Panta. Overlooking the mighty Apurímac River, this site was once intricately linked to Machu Picchu through a sophisticated system of Inca trails.

Often described as “The Last Refuge of the Inca Empire”, Choquequirao reveals impressive terraces, ceremonial spaces, and a remarkable hydraulic system believed to serve agricultural, domestic, and spiritual purposes. Its location and alignment with other sacred sites of the era suggest that it was a strategic religious and administrative center for the Incas.

While it shares many architectural and cultural similarities with Machu Picchu, Choquequirao remains far less crowded, offering travelers an exclusive opportunity to explore one of the last hidden jewels of the Andes.

Day
01

Cusco – Lima Tambo Ruins – Cachora – Chiquisca

Your adventure to Choquequirao begins early. At 5:00 am, our team will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco in a private van, heading towards the picturesque town of San Pedro de Cachora (2,800 m). Here you’ll have the chance to enjoy a traditional Andean breakfast (not included, but highly recommended for its authenticity and affordable price).

After meeting the rest of our expedition crew—cooks, muleteers, and support staff—we set out on our first trekking day, which will last 7 to 8 hours. The trail unfolds through a variety of microclimates and landscapes, from fertile valleys to breathtaking mountain views, including the impressive Pedroyoc snow-capped peak. Along the way, you’ll encounter rich flora and fauna that highlight the natural diversity of the Andes.

A highlight of the day is reaching Capulichayoc Viewpoint, where you’ll witness sweeping panoramas of the Apurímac Canyon, one of the deepest in the world, carved by the powerful Apurímac River. It’s here that we enjoy our first outdoor lunch with unforgettable views, and where we catch our very first glimpse of Choquequirao in the distance.

After a well-deserved break, we continue descending to Chiquisca (1,800 m), our first campsite. Surrounded by stunning landscapes and the serene sound of nature, we’ll settle into our tents for the night.

Meals included: Lunch and Dinner

Day
02

Chiquisca – Maranpata – Choquequirao Ruins

After an energizing breakfast, we begin the most challenging section of the trek: a 5-hour ascent along a steep but rewarding trail that takes us gradually closer to the hidden citadel of Choquequirao. Along the way, the landscape shifts dramatically, offering spectacular views of the Apurímac Canyon and the surrounding Andean peaks.

By midday, we arrive at Maranpata, where we enjoy a well-deserved lunch with breathtaking views. From here, we continue on to the Choquequirao Archaeological Complex, often called the “Cradle of Gold”. Frequently compared to Machu Picchu for their architectural similarities, Choquequirao stands majestically 1,500 meters above the Apurímac River, while Machu Picchu overlooks the Urubamba Canyon. Both share not only geographic parallels but also their vast size, with over 8 hectares of terraces, temples, and plazas—though only about one-third has been uncovered so far.

Our expert guide will lead a comprehensive tour of the site, where you’ll explore the different sectors: ceremonial platforms, residential areas, agricultural terraces, and sacred temples. As ongoing excavations continue, archaeologists uncover new structures each year, making every visit a unique opportunity to witness history in the making.

As the sun sets, we head back to our campsite near Maranpata, where we’ll spend the night surrounded by the energy of this mystical Inca stronghold.

Meals included: Breakfast – Lunch – Dinner

Day
03

Choquequirao – Chiquisca

The day begins with a magical experience: watching the sunrise over the Choquequirao ruins. As the first light touches the stone terraces and temples, the site reveals a mystical atmosphere that connects you directly with the Inca legacy.

After breakfast, we take some final moments to explore or simply absorb the energy of this sacred place before beginning our return journey. The trail retraces our steps, descending through diverse landscapes with panoramic views of the Apurímac Canyon.

By afternoon, we arrive once again at Chiquisca (1,800 m), where we set up camp for our third night. Surrounded by warm valleys and Andean vegetation, this campsite offers the perfect environment to rest after another full day of adventure.

Meals included: Breakfast – Lunch – Dinner

Day
04

Chiquisca – Cachora – Cusco

We start the day early to avoid the strongest heat of the canyon and to fully enjoy the magnificent morning views of the Apurímac River and the surrounding Andean peaks. The ascent takes us back through the winding trail until we once again reach the Capuliyoc viewpoint, our last chance to admire the breathtaking panorama of Choquequirao in the distance.

From here, the snow-capped Padreyoc mountain dominates the horizon, standing majestically over the Apurímac Canyon. The path is enriched by the unique flora and fauna of the region, making our final stretch both challenging and rewarding.

By midday, we complete the final climb to San Pedro de Cachora, where our private transportation awaits. After saying farewell to the team of muleteers and cooks who accompanied us on this incredible journey, we begin the return trip to Cusco, arriving in the late afternoon.

FAQs About Choquequirao Trek 4 Days

How difficult is the Choquequirao trek?

The trek is considered moderate to challenging. Daily hiking ranges between 6–8 hours, with steep ascents and descents, especially when crossing the Apurímac Canyon. A good fitness level is recommended.

What is the altitude at Choquequirao?

The Choquequirao archaeological complex sits at 3,030 meters (9,940 ft) above sea level. Campsites along the route are lower, such as Chiquisca at 1,800 meters, which helps with acclimatization.

When is the best time to do the trek?

The best season is the dry season (April to October) when trails are safer and weather is clearer. The rainy season (November to March) makes the trek more challenging but offers lush green landscapes.

Do I need to book in advance?

Yes. Although the trek doesn’t have the same permit restrictions as the Inca Trail, booking early ensures availability of guides, equipment, and the best organization for your trip.

Is Choquequirao crowded like Machu Picchu?

No. One of the highlights of Choquequirao is its seclusion and tranquility. While Machu Picchu can receive thousands of visitors daily, Choquequirao sees only a few dozen, making it a truly authentic experience.

What type of accommodation is provided?

Accommodation is in spacious waterproof camping tents, with sleeping mattresses provided. A single tent supplement is available for travelers who prefer more privacy.

How do I get to the starting point?

Nickey Travel provides private transportation from Cusco to the trailhead in San Pedro de Cachora and back to Cusco at the end of the trek.

Is there an option to hire extra horses?

Yes. Extra horses can be rented to carry personal belongings at an additional cost. This is highly recommended if you prefer trekking with only a light day pack.

Is there a risk of altitude sickness?

While the altitude is significant, most campsites are lower than Cusco. Spending at least 1–2 days acclimatizing in Cusco before the trek greatly reduces risks. Our guides also carry first aid kits and oxygen for emergencies.

Can I combine Choquequirao with Machu Picchu?

Yes. Many travelers choose to extend their adventure by combining the Choquequirao trek with Machu Picchu, creating a longer and even more epic journey. Ask us for customized itineraries!
